Trans America Cycling Day 13 - Deming, NM to Las Cruces, NM

The link to today's route and statistics is found here.

Unfortunately an accident occurred today in Hatch, NM.  No one was injured, but there was major damage to Trans-America Cycling equipment.  Here is an accounting of the incident from Larry of TAC.

"It’s all about the adventure!

An interesting thing happened on the way to Las Cruces, New Mexico. While properly parked on the side of the road in Hatch, a semi-truck ran into the back of our trailer and pushed my truck and the Trans-America Cycling trailer into a parked car on the opposite side of the street. Luckily, no one was in either of the parked cars.  Our trailer was destroyed and my pickup is no longer driveable.  Many of the team pitched in and helped move luggage and supplies from the trailer to another support vehicle.  We have a great team!

No one was hurt and the tour will go on as planned.  We won’t let a minor inconvenience stop us!"

Trailer totaled and probably truck too

Some green energy projects were seen along our route.  New Mexico harvesst energy from both the sun and the wind.

More photos from Day 13 will be included in the blog for the Day 14 rest day in Las Cruces.

May the author, who lived in Albuquerque, NM for nearly five years while in the Air Force, suggest some typically New Mexican food choices for the rest day.
Blake's Lotaburger is a New Mexico chain that features juicy hamburgers smothered with green chiles grown in Hatch, NM. To a New Mexican no burger is better than a Lotaburger or an Itsaburger with added taste and spice from green chiles.  The thick shakes there are the best - cherry shake is unbeatable.  There is a Lotaburger one block from the La Quinta motel.

New Mexican food culture is a fusion of Pueblo Native American with Hispanic and Mexican cuisine.  It is different from Tex-Mex that we will get in Texas.  Some great distinctively New Mexican food specialties to try are chile rellenos, green chile stew, huevos rancheros, red or green chile enchilladas, carne adovada (pork simmered with chiles), and for dessert sopaipillas (light puff pastery, shaped like a miniature puffed pillow) slathered with honey.  Ask your server about the spiciness of your selection before choosing.

After a long day of riding, the day ended for many with dinner and libations at Applebee's, near the motel.
